Romans 8:26-27 “26 In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; 27 and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”

One of the quirks of being in technical support is learning to decipher what a user’s needs actually are.  Often, the issues that are reported are not the actual issue the user is having.  A printer error may actually be a network error.    A software failure may merely be symptom of faulty hardware.    Part of what we do is ask “probing questions” to determine whether the problem a person actually has is the problem that they think they have.

Though they are far different in makeup, our spiritual problems are often similar.  Many times we perceive a need in one area, when our actual need lies in a far different direction.

Like a master technician the Holy Spirit probes our heart, sees past the symptoms and confusion and knows what our true needs are.  In a process we can neither explain nor understand, the Spirit then intercedes with the Father on our behalf.

The point of this passage is that we don’t have to shoulder the burden of self-diagnosing every single spiritual problem that we have.  When we come before Him in humbleness and with a broken spirit, His Spirit probes our deepest being, discovers our true needs, and brings them to the Father on our behalf.
