Romans 8:2 - “Because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.”

As humans, particularly as American humans, we excel at finding “gray areas”.  It seems every contract has a loophole, every law has an exception, and every rule can be broken.  Yet when it comes to sin and judgment, the law is cut and dry: sin brings death.

As a Christian, when the burden of guilt is lifted from our hearts, and we no longer feel it bearing down on our souls, we tend to forget just how serious sin can be.

In Revelation 2:5, God sends a message to the church in Ephesus: “Therefore remember from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first; or else I am coming to you and will remove your lampstand out of its place -unless you repent.”

Our testimony is a story of redemption.  The law that governed our life has been overridden by the law of grace.  We are not a people who simple exist in a loophole, free to live in sin without consequence.  We are a people who have been set free FROM sin, and now live under the law of the Spirit.

As Matthew Henry points out in his commentary, the law of the Spirit sets us free not only from the guilt of sin, but also from the power of sin.  It is the foundation of our hope, and the cornerstone of our testimony.
